It seems that we all "fit" just perfectly in our classroom so far. This classroom is filled with great personalities, kindness, intelligence and creativity. We reviewed a few concepts in math from second grade including counting money. Parents, get real money in your child's hand. Play store or have them purchase items with cash at a real store.
I let the kids in on a little secret about myself. I secretly would like to be Ms. Frizzle from the the Magic School Bus series. As their science teacher, I am finding myself wanting a Ms. Frizzle dress for every unit. We discussed that we can all be scientist and that our world needs more of them. I am excited to dive into investigating the world around us! We kicked off their interactive notebooks with a lesson on, Who Is A Scientist? We now know that we don't need crazy white hair and a lab coat to discover things about our world! The students drew themselves as a scientist in the most creative ways!

Reading in our classroom has gotten off to a great start! I have eager readers and their abilities to maneuver around the room during center work and self-monitor their work is amazing for the first week of school! More to come on what reading looks like in my classroom. This week's skill focus was on choosing the "Just Right" book. I also got to shadow my class to the library to make sure they were carrying this skill over to the library. It is amazing how many students still don't choose the best book to read. We seemed to nip this problem with the good old "Five Finger" rule of thumb (if there are five words on the first page that you can't read, it is too HARD!).
A great way to engage in math facts is to turn it into Addition War using playing cards. The kids loved this activity!
