Reader's Workshop

Our class reading time is spent in a workshop form.  It involves Shared Reading time where I will share a book and highlight skills to model good reading habits. These skills will drive the instruction for the week.  The students are practicing the skills during their IDR (independent reading) time.  Once they complete their IDR for the day, they may choose a center.  Our centers currently include, the ipad, Promethean, I wonder? and Tumble Books.  More centers will be introduced as we continue through the year.

The I wonder center was hit last week.  The students are given a clue about the object or picture of the week.  They are only allowed to ask 3 questions and they must be Yes or No questions.  It really invovles practicing higher level thinking skills and questioning.  We had two winners last week!!  BN and CJ!  They guessed that the feathers belonged to a turkey!

After visiting a center, the students have a skill activity to complete also!  There are days that some students do not get to all the centers and skills activities. This is due to being pulled to my Guided Reading Table for small group instruction and sometimes due to a case of "chattiness".   They have the whole week to complete the centers and skill activities  However, it is their goal to complete their IDR skill task everyday!!

The pictures below are just a few snapshots around the classroom during Reader's Workshop.

Work baskets are leveled according to students' independent working and reading level!

Moveable and interactive word wall!

We use a lot of checklists to organize throughout the day!

Logging books during IDR so we have a portfolio at the end of the year!
